Coprolite diversity reveals a cryptic ecosystem in an early Tournaisian lake in East Greenland: Implications for ecosystem recovery after the end-Devonian extinction

چکیده

The early Tournaisian (Carboniferous) stage represents a key episode in the evolution of vertebrates. It follows end-Devonian Hangenberg extinction event, which led to major perturbation both terrestrial and aquatic vertebrate ecosystems, resulted significant restructuring assemblages. However, few faunal associations this age have been described, our understanding turnover across Devonian-Carboniferous boundary remains poor. In paper, we present an analysis coprolite material from lacustrine facies at Celsius Bjerg on Ymer Ø East Greenland, overlies world-famous latest Devonian tetrapod-bearing localities. Fifty-five specimens (defined as single or piece shale containing coprolites) were analysed using propagation phase-contrast synchrotron microtomography (PPC-SR?CT). Through study external morphology, shape size combined with information about internal structures, categorise morphotypes, interpret their origin. Notably, identify greater number morphotypes compared taxa known skeletal material, indicating existence cryptic ecosystem that has not yet recovered body fossils. Vertebrate diversity immediate aftermath is inferred higher than expected, might included transient elements within open system, perhaps involving marine basin connections. Our results show coprolites offer alternative fossil data source, revealing otherwise always captured by record.

Bacterial diversity of the rock-water interface in an East Antarctic freshwater ecosystem, Lake Tawani(P)†

Schirmacher Oasis is one of the few ice-free plateaus in East Antarctica that maintains a unique distribution of over 120 microbial-rich, dynamic freshwater lakes, most of which are unexplored. In this study, we describe the bacterial diversity of the rock-water interface in Lake Tawani(P) using culture-independent Bacterial Tag Encoded FLX Amplicon Pyrosequencing (bTEFAP), clone library constr...

Species diversity of fish in the Sanandaj Azad Dam ecosystem

Fish sampling was conducted to evaluate the species diversity of fish in 4 stations in Sanandaj Azad dam ecosystem seasonally from summer of 2017 to spring of 2018. A total of 1057 fish were caught in 12 species, of which more than 80% were caught in the lake behind the dam. The Cyprinidae family had 11 species with the most species diversity and only Sasanidus kermanshahensis belonged to the N...

A review of mercury in Lake Victoria, East Africa: implications for human and ecosystem health.

Lake Victoria, East Africa, has been the site of many recent studies measuring mercury (Hg) concentrations in water, fish, sediment, soil, and humans. Most of these studies were motivated by concerns about Hg contamination from processing of gold ore on the southern shores. Total Hg (THg) concentrations in fish were usually below permissible World Health Organization (WHO) concentrations and in...

Ecological Drivers of Ecosystem Diversity in Sahelian Rangeland of Niger

Description of vegetation patterns associated with environmental factors such as grazing, climate, landforms, substrate variables etc. are helpful for land management planning. This study used new synecological tools to investigate plants composition and to provide ecological descriptions of plants communities of communal pastures in Sahelian Ecological Zone of Niger. Vegetation and several env...

Eccentricity and obliquity paced carbon cycling in the Early Triassic and implications for post-extinction ecosystem recovery

The timing of marine ecosystem recovery following the End Permian Mass Extinction (EPME) remains poorly constrained given the lack of radiometric ages. Here we develop a high-resolution carbonate carbon isotope (δ(13)Ccarb) record for 3.20 million years of the Olenekian in South China that defines the astronomical time-scale for the critical interval of major evolutionary and oceanic events in ...
